The answer to your final question is not so simple; it depends on your perspective. The Corn Refiner's Association and the CCF would contend that companies following the No HFCS bandwagon are doing so for publicity purposes. The Kill King Corn camp might suggest that these companies have finally seen the light, proverbially speaking.

Another interesting question: What does it say about HFCS that Richard Berman's CCF is now leading a PR campaign to restore its good name? Berman, whose array of nonprofits have backed PayDay Loans, Uniroyal's Alar, the rights of casual drinkers to drive, smoker's rights, and fought the American's with Disabilities Act and the raising of the minimum wage, brings a certain aura to the debate. Even if i didn't already have a strong opinion about HFCS, Berman's involvement certainly leaves a bad taste in my mouth, no pun intended.
